Netflix is at it Again! The Witcher Franchise to Become an Original Series

Lauren S. Hissrich announced this weekend that the pilot script for the new Netflix Original Series: The Witcher is now complete and is “out for notes”. Hissrichis is known for also writing for Netflix Marvel shows The Defenders and Daredevil, as well as the political TV show The West Wing. In December, it was announced that Hissrich had been hired to work on The Witcher show and she will also be serving as the Witcher program’s showrunner and executive producer, according to Variety.

Most people who think of The Witcher will automatically think about the game’s that CD Projekt Red created, specifically the most recent installation, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. However back in May 2017 it was officially announced that the Netflix The Witcher series will be based on the eight-part novel series written by Andrzej Sapkowski, instead of the games from developer CD Projekt Red. Sapkowski will be working on the English language drama series as a creative consultant.

Netflix is also working with Polish company Platige Films on the show. You may not know them by name, but you’re probably familiar with its work. The company produced the stunning Witcher 3 trailer called “The Trail” and also created cinematics for Halo 5: Guardians, among a long list of other projects.

Familiar characters such as Geralt of Rivia will still be included in the Netflix adaptation, but there is no word on who will play the main character Geralt or any other of the main characters from the series. Netflix will have a difficult time casting Geralt of Rivia due to fans love for the current voice actor who plays Geralt in The Witcher created by CD Projekt red.

Another big question among fans is whether or not Netflix will side with the character traits of Geralt from the book or the game. There are several key differences between the two that can determine who will play Geralt in this new series.

witcher books

In the book Geralt isn’t as buff as CD Projekt Red Geralt. In fact, he’s being described as rather “lanky”, “slim”, or full of sinews. Milva, upon seeing the witcher’s upper body while he was resting in Brokilon, thought to herself that he looks like a proper man, albeit rather skinny, and full of sinew.

Book Geralt can be defeated and does get beaten fairly often. He was crippled and spared by Vilgefortz. During his fight with the mage Rience and his 4 assassins, Geralt was mortally wounded and would have bled to death if not for Shani and Philippa’s help. In the newest book, Season of Storm, Geralt was beaten to bloody pulp by a female guard-captain and her 4 other, also female, guards in an unarmed fight. Judging from the cutscenes and the mainstory found in The Witcher 2, Geralt had no trouble slaying two witchers in a 1v2 fight. This is a feat I don’t think book Geralt is capable of replicating.

Personality wise, book Geralt is rather sulky, gets offended easily and has somewhat a dosage of self-pity. He repeats the phrase “i’m just a simple, dumb witcher” a lot and  he does sulk from the his friends from time to time. Game Geralt, well, I’d say he’s less dramatic in that department and is very confident and charismatic in comparison.

Whatever route Netflix may take, here at Geek Impulse we are extremely excited for this series and can’t wait for any future updates.
