The game itself for which the anime is loosely based on has received a lot of criticisms since its launch. Some feel that the company mislead the public about the games capabilities and completion. There have been several updates of course since then to try and “fix” the game to satisfy players. The anime looks something like an edgerunner artisan cyberpunk project.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners is a 10-episode standalone anime based on CD Projekt Red’s 2020 action role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077. It tells the narrative of a street boy fighting to survive in Night City, a futuristic cityscape fascinated with body modification biotechnology. With no other options, the young man decides to become a “edgerunner,” or cyberpunk, a renegade outlaw-for-hire willing to go to any length to complete a mission.

The show is produced by CD PROJEKT RED, a prominent game development firm that has previously worked on Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Promare), and is produced by famed Japanese animation company Studio Trigger.

Yoh Yoshinari (Little Witch Academia, BNA: Brand New Animal) is the executive animation director and primary character designer. The screenplay is being written by Masahiko Otsuka (Star Wars: Visions ‘The Elder’) and Yoshiki Usa (GRIDMAN UNIVERSE series) based on the story provided by CD PROJEKT RED. Akira Yamaoka composed the original score (Silent Hill series).

Studio Trigger is a new animation studio founded by Hiroyuki Imaishi, director of Gurren Lagann, GRIDMAN, BNA, and the studio’s first original feature-length anime, Promare, which will premiere in 2019. TRIGGER is a studio that creates original works with unique characters and tales that challenge a global audience. ‘If productions were bullets, we want to be the one who pulls the trigger and sends them flying.’
