Earwig and The Witch is Heading to Theaters, HBO Max Next Month.
On Thursday, GKIDS revealed its domestic release plans for the newest feature, Earwig and the Witch, from Studio Ghibli.
Based on the first trailer for the movie, even if it’s not going to look like the Studio Ghibli movies we know and love, it’s still going to feel like one. On Feb. 3, the film will open in select theaters in both subtitled and English-dubbed versions, through long-time partner Fathom Events, as well as on independent theatre circuits. That will follow with a release on Feb. 5 on HBO Max, the Studio Ghibli catalog’s exclusive U.S. streaming home.
Earwig and the Witch is based on a novel by Diana Wynn Jones, whose Studio Ghibli co-founder and figurehead Hayao Miyazaki adapted Howl’s Moving Castle in 2004. Miyazaki’s son, Goro Miyazaki, who has directed two previous films for the studio, Tales from Earthsea and From Up on Poppy Hill, directed this new adaptation.
Growing up in an orphanage in the British countryside, Earwig has no idea that her mother had magical powers. Her life changes dramatically when a strange couple takes her in, and she is forced to live with a selfish witch. As the headstrong young girl sets out to uncover the secrets of her new guardians, she discovers a world of spells and potions and a mysterious song that may be the key to finding the family she has always wanted.
