Joker Cinematographer Reveals What Happened to Zazie Beetz Character

Spoilers ahead by the Joker Cinematographer on what exactly happened to Sophie, played by Zazie Beetz.

The Joker Film has been in theaters for over a month now. From controversies to breaking box office records, it is safe to say the Todd Phillips take on the Joker has impacted society. Phillips offered the world a unique story to the comic book genre of films. The twists and turns and psychological puppeteering was unsettling to a lot of people but also excited some who saw it for the artistic film it was. The truth about Arthur’s relationship with Zazie Beetz’ Sophie was widely unknown and confused viewers.

Sophie was a much-needed source of comfort and affection for Arthur, especially as his mother’s health began declining. But in the third act of Joker, Joaquin Phoenix’s ill-fated character lets himself into his girlfriend’s apartment. But it terrifies her, as it turns out their connection was all in his mind and not real. After a cut scene, we see Arthur going back to his apartment and see and hear sirens. This leads many to believe he killed her.

We wanted to make the interpretation of the real versus what’s not real, a part of the viewer’s experience. For instance, his relationship to Sophie is a fantasy to him. Some people have asked me, ‘Was she killed?’ [Director Todd Phillips] makes it clear she wasn’t killed. Arthur is killing people who’ve wronged him in a certain way, and Sophie never wronged him. In terms of what we did visually to play with the real and not real, there are callbacks and scenes that mirror each other. We leave hints using imagery or way we covered scenes similarly between scene. Outside of that, I like that people can have the conversation and come to their own conclusions.

These revealing comments sound legitimate in hindsight. Joker had a warped sense of humor and morality. Letting Randall go after killing Gary in his apartment was a great indication. So what are your thoughts on the film? Did you see it all or did you walk out? Let’s discuss.
