In time with the release of the new Kingdom Hearts game Melody of Memory the Square Enix Cafés in Tokyo and Osaka started a Kingdom Hearts Collaboration. I checked out the Tokyo Café but the menu is the same for all locations.
Reservations at the Square Enix Café are not cheap
Kingdom Hearts is a popular franchise in Japan and usually, it is hard to get seats at the Square Enix Café when they do a Kingdom Hearts Collaboration. This time it was quite easy and the Café is hardly booked out. That might be due to the fact that they moved to a larger location last year or due to fewer visitors because of Covid.
Reserving a seat at the Café costs 1.000 Yen per person, which is not cheap but you get a special coaster and a free drink from the menu.
Cute Kingdom Hearts themed Menu
For the collaboration, the chefs at the café came up with several cute dishes that come with Kingdom Hearts-like decoration. I tried the Namine sandwich. It looked really cute but in the end, it was just a broccoli tuna sandwich. But as always with these kinds of cafés, you should not be looking for an amazing experience tastewise as the food is designed mostly to be appealing to look at.
For drinks you can choose from 3 themed tea and soda drinks that come with cute plastic hangers and a honey latte made with honey from the 100 Acre Wood. Every drink comes with a random collectible coaster.
Just like for previous Kingdom Hearts collaborations, you can also try the famous sea salt ice cream. This time it comes as a set with hot milk and you are supposed to melt the ice in the milk. I skipped it this time but this is how it looked like during a previous collaboration.
As usually the interior decoration of the Café was changed to match the Kingdom Hearts theme and you can see scenes from the game on several big screens.
The café is also putting several infection prevention measures in place. Visitors have to disinfect their hands before entering and undergo a temperature check. Also, several plastic sheets and plastic panels were installed between and on the tables.
New Goods in the Shop
After your meal, you can visit the shop on the right of the Café to take home some nice goods as souvenirs. The shop is open for everyone and you can enter without a reservation for the Café. They also sell all kinds of Square Enix related goods and not only goods limited to the current collaboration.
For the collaboration, new items such as collectible badges, stickers, and sweets with Kingdom Hearts design were released. You can also purchase some of the dishes together with your meal. The current collaboration is still ongoing until March 12, 2021.
If you are a fan of the Kingdom Hearts franchise and visit Japan during a collaboration I can recommend a visit to the Café even if it’s just for trying the seal salt icecream. If you don’t expect too much of the food and check the menu in advance so the high prices don’t surprise you, you should have a good time.
