Marvel Champions The Card Game Review

Marvel Champions Geek Impulse

Fantasy Flight Games is a game company well known for two things. First, they hold many popular licensing rights such as Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, etc. If its a popular fan series they have or had the license to make games for it. Second, they coined the term “Living Card Game” or LCG. Theses two facts go hand in hand since they have recently released there new LCG game Marvel Champions.

Marvel Champions is a cooperative card game that has up to 4 players take the role of popular Marvel heroes as they work together to stop the villain and thwart their scheme. Gameplay goes back and forth between heroes and the villain, The Heroes play through a scenario and must defeat the villain in multiple stages. The Villain will be attacking the heroes as well as progressing his “Scheme” if the heroes are defeated or they fail to prevent his scheme the players lose.

Now the brief overview is done, here is what I think about this game

(Pro) Everything You Need in one Box (for Real this Time)

I use the term Living Card Game, what does that mean? As opposed to a randomized Trading Card game you know exactly what’s inside the contents of an LCG. Normally gamers would have to buy at least 2 core boxes of an FFG game to have every card in the set. This time around they made sure you had everything in one box. Instead of paying $40 retail for 2 core boxes you are paying $60 for the entire set. Straight from the box, you can easily have a 4 player game. I’ve had an issue with this with other FFG games as I did not want to buy multiple copies of a core to play. I’m happy to spend more money on one product than buying more than one of the same product.

(Pro) Multi-Player or Solo, The Villain does Not Care.

You may choose to play this game as a single-player or multi-player. The Villain deck scales up depending on the number of players in-game so the difficulty remains constant regardless of players. I will tell you, you can lose in this game. The villain runs on its mechanics and if you are not careful players will find themselves overwhelmed. Each Hero has its mini Nemesis deck that will slow the Heroes down and adds cards to the Villain Deck.

(Pro) Customization and Replay Value

Out of the box, there are Learn to Play decks assembled for up to 2 players. Once you become accustomed to the rules and the game, Players may then assemble other hero decks. They may also assemble other Villain Scenarios with the other villains included with the box. This means there will be a lot of replay value for players.

(Con) Rules Books and Casual Players

I have played many other games so learning this one was not hard. After a run-through, I understood more or less the game and the more you play the easier it gets. For anyone not used to playing card games or board games, they may find this game a bit overwhelming at first. The games mechanic, card abilities, and interactions will be confusing to a casual player. Do not be too intimidated, the box sets up a 1-2 player game for players to start learning. The core also comes with cheat sheets to help understand what to do for Heroes and villain phases

(Minor Con) Players Needed

This is a game you want to play with Friends. The Core box alone accommodates 2 people and they should be happy with all the cards available. You will benefit from seeking out other players that have their own copy.

Final Thoughts

In the end, I was happy with my purchase, The price was reasonable for what I was getting. The money saved can go towards future expansions for this game. The game is fun and I found myself replaying the game just so I could finally beat the Rhino. Also, who doesn’t want to play a Marvel Superhero? I can’t wait to see which friends bought the game and take down some Villains. The only thing left to say is “AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!”
