For those of you who fell in love with the beautiful and whimsical world of Avatar: The Last Airbender, with characters such as Ang, Katara, and Sokka; the team is now back for a new graphic novel by Dark Horse Comics.
One of the graphic novels, titled Avatar: The Last Airbender — Imbalance Part One, is the first part of a new trilogy that continues the main story. In it, Aang and his friends Katara, Sokka, and Toph find themselves caught up in a conflict between benders and non-benders.The new trilogy of graphic novels comes from writer Faith Erin Hicks and artist Peter Wartman, working in conjunction with the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. Hicks and Wartman will pick up where the previous writer/artist Gene Luen Yang left off.
In the first part of Imbalance; Aang, Toph, Katara, and Sokka are dealing with tensions between a benders and a non-bender group in a growing industrial town. This a theme that was explored in the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender’s sequel series The Legend of Korra, which took place in Republic City. Perhaps this booming industrial town will eventually evolve and become the Republic City, and perhaps Imbalance will feature some new ties between Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.
Dark Horse Comics has also announced a new one-shot graphic novel titled Avatar: The Last Airbender – Team Avatar Tales. This series will be an anthology title collecting previously released stories from Dark Horse’s Free Comic Book Day samplers and packaging them with some brand new stories. The stories will range from comedies to adventures to more contemplative stories, as Avatar: The Last Airbender is known to do. These will serve as great side stories for viewers to fall in love with the characters and also take a breather from the main storyline. Hicks and Yang will both have stories included, as will Carla Speed McNeill, Ron Koertge, Dav Scheidt, and Sara Goetter. Team Avatar Tales will be released on September 5, while Imbalance Part One arrives on October 10.
The Legend of Korra has also continued in a graphic novel series thanks to Dark Horse Comics. The series, titled “Turf Wars,” is written by co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino and follows Korra’s adventures after the conclusion of the animated series, and it also includes her first kiss with Asami.
If you can’t wait for the new Avatar: The Last Airbender series and you wish to get caught up on the series or at least relieve the glory days of Ang and his crew; there will be a new full series box set available to viewers in Summer 2018.
